Home, sweet (local, democratic) home

A list of 10 Awesome Local Democracy Actions

to make your #stayathome more fruitful

It’s everywhere in the news that, in the light of the most recent COVID-19 developments, the whole of Italy is now required to “stay at home”, i.e. avoid all unnecessary movements outside the domestic walls as well as all gatherings with people outside of cohabitants – with some due exceptions, of course.

Italians are however not the only ones who are adopting these higher precautionary measures to prevent the contagion from spreading further and farther. Be your home isolation a response to governmental requests or more simply an act of individual responsibility, here is a list of 10 “Awesome Local Democracy Actions” that ALDA wishes to suggest in order to make your home isolation more fruitful …and hopefully enjoyable!

5 big-picture ones to begin with:

1.  Read. Take this time to catch up with the newsletters, magazines and publications by NGOs and CSOs you may have neglected in the past few months...
2.  Watch. The web offers some really well-made informative documentaries on important social issues of the contemporary world we may have no clue about!
3. Act. Have you signed all latest petitions for the causes you care about? Give it a check!
4. Reconnect. Whether you prefer sending emails or putting ink on actual paper in stamped letters, this is a great moment to reconnect in writing with dear ones who live elsewhere!

5.  Discuss. After all the reading, watching, acting and reconnecting, it’s worth discussing your views on whatever issues you’ve learnt about with other people, to bring your informed point of view and make it a collective thought. Video-conferences can be great!

…then, ALDA is also there to offer some (free!) ideas for productive pastimes:

6. Play. Why not take advantage of this peculiar moment to discover how to manage a participatory process? Play with the ENLARGE gamebookit’s available in 5 languages!
7.  Train. How about some gender equality training? Just access the GET UP platform!
8.  Play again. Seriously. Also about gender stereotypes and accessible for the little ones, too, the GET UP serious game “A gender story” is available in 5 languages as well :)
9.  Discover. The ALDA YouTube channel is still developing, but it offers some good quality videos: interviews, awareness raising, and our very own webinar series!

10. And finally: share. We would love to hear from you: tell us about the current situation where you live by commenting on this blog!

It’s in moments like this that it’s most important to stay united. Join us in our 10 Awesome Local Democracy Actions and write us about it!
